Il Teatro di ingresso
⎯⎯⎯
The entrance Theatre

After passing through the gateway to the Horti Farnesiani, visitors found themselves in the dimly-lit vestibule, an evocative reference to the dark and secret "grottoes" of the hill. By contrast, light triumphed in the semi- circular entrance Theatre, also described in the documents as the "Ovato dell'androne" ("Oval of the Entrance"), or "Teatro di bussi" ("box hedges theatre").
The exedra contained niches hosting statues from the extensive Farnese Collection, beneath which jets of water gushed from stucco masks.
The semi-circular theatre, with the wall and the corner pavilions, alludes to the exedra-shaped faηade of the Roman imperial Palace near the Circus Maximus and well known to the scholars of the time.
The "theatre" marked the start of the ascent to the upper terraces, along three sets of stairs, cordonatas and passages, expertly following the terrain of the hill.
