Deerfield in Franklin County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
farm & house
The indoor comforts of home were provided by outdoor work on the farm.
Bordered by house, garden, outbuildings, and fields, the farm yard has always been a busy crossroads of activity now and in the past. Farm families of the 1800s managed the fields and surrounding acreage in the North Meadow to grow grains, raise livestock, and cultivate fruits and vegetables. They travelled back and forth daily and seasonally, carting out manure to fertilize fields and carting in hay, grains, and other produce. During harvest time, families worked in kitchens and backyards to process and preserve perishables for eating, storage, neighborhood barter, or to sell in regional markets. The Sheldon House, located on the Street just north of where you stand, shares with today's visitors what life was like for a three-generation farming family who lived there at the turn of the 19th century. The house is open for self-guided tours with a general admission ticket to Historic Deerfield, available at the Visitor Center at Hall Tavern.
