Inscription.

English:
A building already present in the area before its 16th-century reorganization came to host what is described in the documents as the "Casino del Belvedere" ("Belvedere Lodge", now known as the "Casina Farnese").

Its transformation by the Farnese involved adding the two-storey loggia, positioned above a lower pre-existing building, and the creation of the "secret garden", enclosed by the wall running all around it resting on the remains of Roman structures.

It was accessed through an arched door, flanked by niches and preceded by semi-circular steps. Above was a long narrow terrace giving access to the upper loggia. The small building opened on the north side through a portico with three arches with decorated vaults.

The loggia, with round arches and a travertine structure, still has the fresco decoration that covered it completely. The paintings are attributed

to artists of the Zuccari workshop, well-known Renaissance painters, and represent heraldic motifs and subjects from classical mythology. Particularly important is the depiction of the myth of Hercules and Cacus, alluding to one of Alessandro's diplomatic successes.

In Farnese mythography, Cacus is the personification of Pope Julius III, who seized Parma and Piacenza (the oxen) from the Farnese family. Hercules (the personification of Alessandro Farnese) subdues Cacus and, with his diplomatic talents, does justice by forcing Julius III to return the estates to Ottavio Farnese, Alessandro's brother.
