Fun Facts:
The bald eagle's scientific name signifies a sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with a white (leukos) head. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white", not hairless.

The bald eagle was officially declared the National Emblem of the United States in 1782. It was selected by the founding fathers because it is a species unique to North America.

The flight speed of a bald eagle ranges between 36 and 44 miles per hour.

Bald eagles build nests up to 8 feet across and 12 feet deep. These nests may weigh more than a ton and may be constructed one hundred and fifty feet above the ground.

Up to 100 bald eagles winter in Connecticut from December to early March along major rivers and at large reservoirs. For the first time since the 1950s a pair of bald eagles nested in Barkhamsted, Connecticut in the summer of 1992
