On Sunday, July 22, 1781,
while engaged in public worship
in the building then occupying this site
Rev. Dr. Moses Mather
and fifty men of this congregation were captured
by British troops and taken to New York
There several of them
perished in prison.

A people that jeoparded their lives unto the death

To commemorate the sufferings of
these patriots
this tablet has been erected.

 
Erected 1894 by Emma H. Delafield, of the Society of Colonial Dames of America; A. Floyd Delafield, Wm. Freeman French, Thaddeus Bell, of the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in the State of Connecticut.
