Inscription.

of the Roman Forum's north-western quadrant, Piranesi exalts the iconic role played by the Column of Phocas, depicting it at double its actual height (around 16 meters rather than its actual 7 meters) thanks to the greatly reduced size of the shepherd seated at its base. Beneath the base of this column, 19th century excavations would unearth a wide flight of steps, half of which was removed in the early 1900's. At the center of the scene is the Arch of Septimius Severus, erected in 203 AD to mark the emperor's decennalia in celebration of his triumph over the Parthians. The two lateral archways, buried up to two thirds of their total height, are built with masonry infill walls that contain access doors leading to inner cavities inside the arch.
