Inscription.

English:
Piranesi shows us, in this as in two other etchings, how the foundations of monuments and their surrounding spaces were reused as private residences, equipped with stables and carriage houses. The imposing bulk of the Temple of Saturn (erroneously identified as the Temple of Concord) acted as a terrace to the Clivus Capitolinus on its uphill side and as a retaining wall abutting the Vicus lugarius on its downhill side. At the center of the print, Piranesi has drawn down to the smallest detail a two-story tenement built against the podium of the temple, complete with terrace, pergola and a series of potted plants to decorate its ledges. To show the temple in its entirety, Piranesi once again plays with the monuments' proportions, compressing the Arch of Septimius Severus considerably compared to its actual perspective.
