Inscription.

English:
In this print, Piranesi thrusts before the viewer all the majesty and ruin of the monumental center of ancient Rome. Every corner of the area that would later become Campo Vaccino is animated by tiny wayfarers, scholars, shepherds, "junk" hunters, excavators, "milords" and peaceful cattle

stopping for a drink. Triumphal arches, columns, ancient temples and modern churches form a proscenium and are at the same time the subjects of a view that shows them in all their magnificence and ruin, monumental and semi-submerged in the earth, assaulted by vegetation and eroded by time. Piranesi's analytical topographic description of the monuments is as attentive as his technique is sophisticated, alternating crisp highlights with soft, dark shadows within a perspective framework that is nothing short of masterful.
