1. Heroes of 19th Century Science Marker
Inscription. Marker One:
Charles Darwin: 1809 - 1882
An English naturalist and geologist, in 1859 he published: "On the Origin of Species,” the first book to introduce the theory of natural selection as the basis of the evolution of species. He also grew grapevines in his glass greenhouse in Kent, and his theory of adaptation was used by French scientists Planchon and Millardet when they proposed using American rootstock to defeat the awful American bug Phylloxera: a root louse that was destroying the vineyards of France in the early 1870's.

Thomas Edison: 1847 1931
American inventor and businessman, he created the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the light bulb. He held 1,093 patents, and developed a system of electric power and generation to homes, businesses, and factories. He enjoyed using Morse code so much that he named his children Dot and Dash.

Marker Two
History Hill

As you make the short walk to our historic winery, you will observe historic figures nestled into our green hillside of the Mayacamas Mountains. The Count of Buena Vista dug into the living rock of those volcanic mountains to make the first wine cellars and stone winery buildings in California, thereby enduring his place in wine history.

It is with a profound respect

and admiration for important people in history that we present their images upon our hillside.

The groupings we present may spark connections… indeed, many themes exist herein: the story of wine from ancient times to the present, the discovery of the New World, revolutionary heroes in politics and science, the building and creating of the American West, and California wine heroes.

We hope that considering these groupings may bring forth conversations best resolved with a glass of delicious Buena Vista wine. Please enjoy… the journey of wine is the journey of life itself!
