Inscription.
The Hazelton Post Office was established July 6, 1903. It was located at this site in the home of Elise Longpre Perras. In December of 1903 the nearby Williamsport Post Office (Williamsport, N.D. about 3 ˝ miles N.E. of Hazelton) closed and its delivery was taken over by the new Hazelton office. Williamsport had been bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad which was the cause of its demise and also the reason this new town of Hazelton had sprung up along the tracks. The train delivered mail to the town and the post office site location was described by its distance from the track.

Elise Longpre Perras was the first postmaster of Hazelton. In June of 1903 she applied to open the new post office in her home where she later had a millinery shop.

(Saint Paul Cemetery, Hazelton, North Dakota) Mrs. Perras Was the first postmistress of Hazelton. She also had a millinery shop in conjunction with the Post Office, which was located in her home. In 1918 a group of 15 men in Hazelton were drinking heavily and discussing alleged wheat hoarding. Soon mob violence resulted, and Mrs. Perras was shot and killed by one of the rioters. Her murderer received a five year prison sentence, and the judge dismissed charges of unlawful assembly and rout against the remaining “mob” members.
