Durant la nit del 17 de gener de 1977, 124 marines de la VI flota nord-americana s'embarcaren a prop de l'estàtua de Colom en una barcassa per retornar als seus vaixells. A causa d'una maniobra errònia, la llanxa es va creuar en la trajectòria del vaixell basc Urlea, el qual no va poder evitar la col·lisió. La petita embarcació va bolcar i tots els seus ocupants van caure a les fredes aigües del port. 49 homes varen perdre la vida. L'escultura representa l'emblema dels marines nord-americans, la US Navy Anchor (l'ancora de la Marina dels EUA).

During the night of 17 January 1977, 124 marines of the Sixth US fleet climbed aboard a barge near the statue of Columbus to return to their ships. The boat accidentally crossed the path of the Basque ship Urlea, which could not avoid the collision. The small boat capsized and all its occupants fell into the cold port waters. 49 men lost their lives. The sculpture represents the US Navy Anchor, the emblem of the American marines.
