COLD WAR

(1945-1991) The threat of nuclear war from the end of WWII until the collapse of the USSR in 1991 was known as the Cold War.

When West Berlin was cutoff by the Soviet Union in 1948, an emergency airlift kept the city supplied for 15 months. The Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 brought the world to the brink of war, but the Soviets backed down and removed their missiles from Cuba.

The Olympics and the space race were other arenas of Cold War competition.

The tension of the Cold War touched everyone, as thousands of nuclear weapons were amassed to assure 'mutual destruction' in the event of an all-out war.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 symbolized the end of the Cold War era.

PERSIAN GULF WAR


(1991) A coalition of 28 US-led nations helped push Iraqi troops out of Kuwait in 1991. The military action was sanctioned by the UN, which had also authorized an economic embargo in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.

A month-long coalition air campaign, featuring stealth planes and smart bombs, was followed up by a swift ground assault in February called Operation Desert Storm. Hundreds of burning oil wells were left in the wake of the Iraqi retreat. Their mission to
