Inscription.
Local craftsmen from Germantown and Philadelphia were hired to build Cliveden. The master carpenter responsible for the framing, roofing and exterior and woodwork was Jacob Knorr. The lumber for the framing was supplied by Anthony Gilbert and the roof shingles were supplied by Levi Budd. The master mason who constructed the stone foundation and walls was John Hesser. Lime for mortar and stucco was supplied by Caspar Johnson. The ornamental cellar window frames, front door sill and string course were made by stone carver Caspar Guyer. The blacksmith who made hardware such as hinges and locks, was Christopher Hargasheimer. The finish hardware, such as brass doorknobs, was made by metalsmith William Rush. Plumber Eden Haydock constructed the drainage system. Painter Philip Warner painted the house. Well known Philadelphia woodcarvers Nicholas Bernard and Martin Jugiez made the ornamental woodwork in the entrance hall and parlor. More research is being done to determine if enslaved workers contributed to the construction of Cliveden.
