Louise Marie Loeber 1894-1983

Lou Loeber was born in Amsterdam and grew up in Blaricum. Thanks to her socially committed, art-loving parents, she was introduced to the artistic world at an early age. Loeber painted landscapes, cityscapes, factories. human figures and still lifes. She believed that art should be understandable and attractive to the people. This was expressed in highly simplified representations of landscapes and objects in tightly defined surfaces, which are filled with contrasting colors. She kept prices low by making multiples of her pieces. Loeber was a member of the SDAP (Social Democratic Workers Party) (which later merged with the PvdA) and of the Socialist Artists' Circle, where artists with the same artistic and political ideas united. Even after the Second World War, during which she actively resisted, the pursuit of a harmonious society was an important driving force in her work. Later in life, she came back into the spotlight thanks to a group of artists she joined and a well-received exhibition.
