USS Arcadia (AD-23): Homeport, Newport, RI
After Basic Training at NTC Great Lakes Naval Station Ed trained as a ship fitter where he learned to install, maintain, and repair plumbing and fixtures. He was then assigned to and served aboard the USS Arcadia, a Klondike class destroyer tender, for nearly two years. He trained and became rated as a Hull Technician where he later fabricated, assembled, and erected metal parts for the ship. A reservist with several periods of broken service, Ed was released from active duty after 2 years of service. He then transferred to the Selected Reserve where he served until his return to Active Duty as a Naval Reserve Canvasser Recruiter where he received the Gold Wreath Award for Excellence in Recruiting. Ed was promoted to Petty Officer First Class and later released from Active Duty and served in the Selected Reserve until his death.
