Henry Baxter
Company C, 7th Michigan Infantry Regiment to Brigade Commander, 3rd Division, V Corps
Born in Sidney Plains on 8 September 1821, Baxter was later wounded four separate times during the Civil War.
As a leader of men, Baxter had the confidence of his superiors throughout the war where he rose through the ranks from Captain to Brigadier General. During the war he commanded units from company and regiment to brigades, fighting in the Seven Days Battles, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Gettysburg where he fought and led brilliantly as a Brigadier General. He also fought in the Battle of the Wilderness and the later stages of the siege of Richmond and Petersburg, President Andrew Johnson nominated him for the award of brevet grade major general to rank from April 1, 1965 and the U.S. Senate confirmed the award on 23 July 1866.
Baxter later served as Register of Deeds for the State of Michigan and was then appointed by President Grant as Minister to Honduras in 1869. He died of pneumonia on 30 December 1873 in Jonesville, Michigan where he is buried.
