1. Gevelsteen als eerbetoon aan patriottenleider Ondaatje (NUK, August 31, 2021). Full news article title in translation: “A Plaque as a tribute to patriot leader Ondaatje”.
Excerpt (in translation): Pieter Quint Ondaatje (1758-1818) was a patriot leader who unleashed a revolution in Utrecht. Under his leadership, the hated Utrecht city council was deposed in 1786 and the city was given a government elected by the citizenry.(Submitted on September 25, 2023.)
Utrecht's democracy did not last long, because a year later Stadtholder Willem V took power again. Despite its short duration, the Utrecht movement became a source of inspiration for rebellious movements elsewhere in the country and across the borders. Even the American revolutionaries followed the event with great interest.
Ondaatje came from what was then Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and had a Tamil father and a Dutch mother. He went to study in Utrecht and became one of the few politicians of color at that time.
2. Patriottentijd (Wikipedia).
Overview: The Patriottentijd (lit. '"Time of the Patriots"') was a period of political instability in the Dutch Republic between approximately 1780 and 1787. Its name derives from the Patriots (Patriotten) faction who opposed the rule of the stadtholder, William V, Prince of Orange, and his supporters who were known as Orangists (Orangisten).(Submitted on September 25, 2023.)
