Making Tracks
The track layer became a hard limestone. The filler layer became either a soft shale or a brittle rock called lime marl. Over time, erosion removed the softer filler layer exposing molds of the animals' feet.

Step 1: An animal walks across soft, moist, cohesive sediment.
Step 2: The imprint fills with sediment of contrasting texture that does not distort the original. Both layers then harden.
Step 3: Differential erosion removes the softer rock type.
