There are many excellent birding hotspots throughout Norfolk County. The Long Point area - which includes a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance - is one of Canada's greatest birdwatching destinations. From the sweeping wetlands of Big Creek National Wildlife Area to the globally significant Norfolk Forest Complex and Long Point Important Bird Areas, this region is a haven for unique flora and fauna, habitats, and ecological systems. More than 175 bird species have nested here.
Long Point is also a key North American stopover site for migratory birds. Extending nearly 40 km into Lake Erie, the Long Point Peninsula is the world's longest freshwater sandspit, and attracts staggering numbers of migrants each year. In total, roughly. 400 bird species have been recorded in the area.
Founded in 1960, Long Point Bird Observatory is a flagship program of Bird Studies Canada, and is the Western Hemisphere's oldest bird observatory and most productive migration monitoring operation. Port Rowan is home to the national headquarters of Bird Studies Canada, our country's leading charitable organization for bird science and conservation. Bird Studies Canada advances the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of wild birds and their habitats. Through Citizen Science programs and targeted research, Bird Studies Canada analyzes long-term bird population trends to guide vital conservation decisions and actions.
