1. Ohio Coat of Arms Marker

Inscription. This view of Mount Logan is said to have inspired the design of the coat of arms of the state of Ohio. Tradition relates that Thomas Worthington, one of Ohio's first two U.S. senators; Edward Tiffin, first governor; and William Creighton, first Ohio secretary of state, after an allnight party at Worthington's home watched the sun rise over Mount Logan from near this spot. The sight impressed the leaders of the new state so profoundly that in 1803 a coat of arms was provided by law incorporating a basic motif of a demi-sun in splendor rising above a mountain. The sun represents the new state, the sheaf of wheat signifies agriculture and the bundle of 17 arrows denotes the fact that Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the Union. The Great Seal is composed of the coat of arms with the encircling inscription, "The Great Seal of the State of Ohio," and is reserved for official use by the governor.
