Excerpt: In Padrón near the ponte de Santiago, we can make a stop at the fountain, Fonte do Carme to take a sip of natural waters. It was built by Pedro de la Barcena in 1577.(Submitted on October 16, 2023.)
It consists of three figures, in the inferior is Virxe das Dores, patroness of women in labour. In the central figure you can see the depiction of Santiago being brought to this region by his disciples. At the top, we can see a portrayal Raíña Lupa being baptised by the Santiago.
In the eighteenth century, it was rebuiltduring the reign of Carlos IV, when Joaquin Foxi Bendaña was the mayor of Padrón, in 1789, as indicated by the inscription.
Inside the fountain, Fonte do Carme, there is a plaque indicating that the illustrious Don Manuel de Sanlúcar, bishop of Sidonia, granted 40 days of indulgences to those who devoutly prayed a Hail Mary before Virxe das Dores’s image.

5. Fountain of Carme - iconography above grotto entrance
Above the grotto entrance is the iconography mentioned on the marker. The upper piece depicts Queen Lupa being baptized for the sake of Saint James, and the lower piece depicts the arrival (according to the hagiography) of Saint James’ body (the “traslatio”) in Padrón in 44 AD.
