Inscription.  
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Crerar joined the Canadian military in 1910, and was responsible for designing the largest and most successful creeping barrage of WWI, earning him the Distinguished Service Order. At the outbreak of WWII, he was promoted to brigadier general and later became Chief of the General Staff. And in 1941, was named the commanding officer of the Canadian I Corps. In March 1944, he assumed command of the First Canadian Army and went on to become the first Canadian to gain the rank of full general while still in active service at the front.

Né à Hamilton, en Ontario, Crerar s'enrôle dans l'armée canadienne en 1910 et il est chargé de la conception du barrage roulant le plus important et le plus réussi de la première guerre mondiale, ce qui lui vaut l'ordre du service distingué. Au début de la deuxième guerre mondiale, il est promu brigadier général et plus tard chef d'état-major général. En 1941, il est nommé commandant du 1er corps canadien. Enmars 1944, il assume le commandement de la première armée canadienne et devient le premier canadien à obtenir le grade de général
