1. Montgomery Tavern and Slave Pen Marker
Capable of housing over 300 horses in its stables in the rear, Montgomery Tavern, at 1363-1365 Wisconsin, catered to farmers looking to buy the enslaved at John Beattie's Auction. The enslaved were held in a pen on O Street that stretched from the alley at 3148 to 3138. The foundation stones on 3148 are from the original pen. Henry Copperthite, the son of indentured servants and owner of the Old Connecticut Pie Company at 1403 Wisconsin Avenue, had the Montgomery's Stables and Pen torn down in 1904 when he built six row houses on O Street. Across O Street, in the parking lot behind 1403 Wisconsin, the stones in the wall are reported to be recycled from the slave pen.
