Regarding Kiddieland Amusement Park. Kiddieland opened in 1929 at the northwest corner of North Avenue and 1st Avenue, about 2½ miles (by car) northwest of the library. Kiddieland closed in 2009 after an ownership dispute, and it was torn down in 2010. It was replaced by a Costco.
The Kiddieland sign, which for years had lit up the North and 1st intersection, was preserved and rededicated on the side of the Melrose Park library in 2012. The section of 1st Avenue near the Costco has a brown honorary street sign calling it Kiddieland Amusement Park Road. Meanwhile, many of the rides that once entertained families at Kiddieland were acquired and relocated to other parks. Several are at Santa's Village, an amusement park in East Dundee, Illinois; Kiddieland's roller coaster, the Little Dipper, was acquired by Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois.
The entrance to the library parking lot also features another sign from a now-departed Melrose Park institution from that same 1st and North intersection: the Maywood Park race track. The harness-racing track, which was at the intersection's southwest corner, opened in 1946 and closed in 2015. In 2019 it was sold and torn down, and today it is the site of an Amazon distribution center.

This view of the Kiddieland sign overlooking the intersection of North Avenue and 1st Avenue was taken during its final year of operation. The Kiddieland site today is a Costco. The sign for the Maywood Park race track is visible across the street in the background; it has also since been razed and is now home to an Amazon logistics center.
