Eclectic Store-Residence
Protected Monument
Inscription.
Eclectic store-residence, resting in the
back on Maastricht's city-wall, is tracing
its history to the 13th century. The faηade,
inspired in 1899 by architect J. Hollman
features capitals and coloured mosaic
from the Jugendstil period. The roof is
saddlebacked with twin-towers.
The golden ram and sheep's heads on
the second level symbolize the fact that
a butchery operated here from 1899 to
1947. The city wall, built with permission
of Count Hendrik I of Brabant in 1229,
used to protect the Dominican Cloister,
which was located behind this Monument.
The Cloister, in existence from 1261 to
1968, gave way in 2007 to the EntreDeux
shopping mall.
