1. Clement Comer Clay Marker
Inscription. Born in Virginia; attorney, judge, and planter. Chair of Committee of Fifteen that drafted the 1st Alabama Constitution during Convention held July 5-Aug 2, 1819 in what is now Huntsville; 1 of 8 signers from Madison County; and 1 of 44 delegates from 22 counties. The Alabama Constitution opened the way to statehood with a democracy allowing the direct election of important public officials.
