It was on August 17, 1996, Friday, at half past four on Voetboogstraat in Amsterdam. Four drunken, boisterous boys pick a fight with bargoers and a homeless man. Two students were also made to suffer. They are completely beaten up. JOES KLOPPENBURG shouted: Stop it! He was then beaten to death completely senselessly. He was 26.
There is a memorial on Voetboogstraat at the spot where Joes was killed.

Excerpt (in translation): Joes Kloppenburg (Badhoevedorp, May 7, 1970 Amsterdam, August 17, 1996) posthumously became known as a victim of senseless violence. The manslaughter of Joes Kloppenburg on August 17, 1996 in Amsterdam was a notorious violent crime, in which a 26-year-old man died as a result of nightlife violence.(Submitted on November 10, 2023.)
The perpetrator, Joelan Ritchard L., was sentenced to 8 years in prison.
On August 17, 1996, Kloppenburg came out of caf้ De Schutter in Amsterdam's Voetboogstraat. He saw how down the alley a student and young father were being kicked around by some drunken men. Stop it! Kloppenburg shouted at the men. Their aggression turned against him. Kloppenburg himself was beaten up. A few hours later he died at the age of 26 in an Amsterdam hospital.
