Inscription.
August 9, 1804
Clark wrote in his journal:  "The fog being thick detained us untile half pasd. 7 oClock at which time we Set out and proceeded on under a Gentle Breeze from the SE  I walked on Shore, Saw an Elk, crossed a Istmust (isthmus) of 3/4 of a mile to the river & returned to the boat  camped on the L. S. (Larboard Side) above a Beaver Den. Musqutors verry troubleson."

Clark's field notes indicated the difficult problems the expedition had in navigating their three boats up river past here:
N. 60w  about 2 ms (miles) to a Sand. makeing out from the larboard point
S 80 W    1/2 me to a Drift Log on the Sand   This place is Called Coupe a Jarcke a place where the river cut through and shortened the River Sevl. mls

S 18 E    2 1/2 ms to Som Snags near some Willows on the S.S. . .

S 20 W    2 1/2 ms to a {Black} Burnt Stump on the Bank in the bend to L.S. at which place I was yesterday at this place within 3/4 of a mile & round the bends 13 ms.


September 5, 1806
On their return trip downriver 2 yrs. later, they were able to travel much faster (60-70 miles per day) and they again noted passing the "Coupee a Jacke". They camped again in this area.

1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent an expedition commanded by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase, to seek an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean, and to make peaceable contact with the native peoples: On May 14, 1804, the explorers headed up the Missouri. They reached the Pacific in November, 1805. They returned to St. Louis on September 23, 1806, having traveled more than 8000 miles in two years, four months and nine days.
