Original “Bump” Bridge

1. Village Of New Bremen Marker
Inscription. The original "bump" bridge crossing the feeder was just a few feet above the water line of the canal. A canal boat actually bumped or pushed the bridge to turn the bridge decking to an open position. Then the bridge structure was a turntable on supporting rollers and ball bearings that pivoted on a pinion. Because the bridge was counterbalanced, it returned to the closed position after the boat had passed. This type of bridge was used at Plum Street and First Street in New Bremen.
