1. 40 South Washington Street Marker

Inscription. Once known as the Arcade Department Store, this site served as the center for retail business in New Bremen for more than 60 years. After four local merchants merged their businesses in the early 1900s, it was considered the largest department store located between Cincinnati and Toledo. With over 15,000 square feet of sales floor the store housed over 270,000 items. Products sold were groceries and dry goods, furniture, shoes, clothing and a variety of other household and Hardware goods. In the 1950s, Crown Equipment Corporation built their first lift truck in this building.
