Inscription. These stones were originally used at Grand Lake St. Marys in the Bulkhead Lock constructed in 1852.

Each stone was "neatly dressed with a bush hammer," meaning it was cut and finished with a hand chisel by masons at the construction site.

Limestone quarried in Piqua was used to construct locks, culverts and aqueducts on the Miami and Erie Canal.

Building stone was a major product shipped on canal boats and can be found today in structures throughout the area.
