Inscription.
In the mid-1800s, William Redmond and his family lived in a large home named "Hillside," located on North Ridgewood Road. He also owned a large parcel of sloping land across the street from his home. At that time, South Orange was primarily a farming community, so it was not unusual when a farmer by the name of Mr. Flood struck a deal with Mr. Redmond to rent the slope to graze his Jersey cows. Mr. Flood and his cows were such a fixture in town that residents still refer to that property as "Flood's Hill." Later, the slope became part of the Lone Oaks golf course.

Erected by The Township of South Orange Village.

Additional commentary.
1.
The South Orange & Maplewood Trolley actually began operations in 1894. The ground along this section of the river was quite marshy prior to drainage in 1881-1883. After reclamation, the
Meadow Land Society purchased the land to avoid industrialization and subdivision.
The group worked with the South Orange Field Club in managing the land. The Club built and operated the Lone Oak 9-hole links golf course for a dozen years from 1896.
