1. A Timeline of ABQ BioPark Tingley Beach Marker
Inscription.

1900's
The Rio Grande was once a meandering river and flooded all the way to where you are standing. At the turn of the century levees were built here to prevent flooding.

1933
Mayor Tingley and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District turn the area into an overflow lagoon.

1946
Mayor Tingley converts lagoon into public swimming pool, and in 1948, renames this spot Ernie Pyle Beach.

1954
Now named Tingley Beach the area reopens for fishing only after polio scare.

2005
Tingley Beach becomes part of the ABQ BioPark and undergoes renovations.

2007
First Public Art pieces are installed at Tingley Beach as part of the 1% For Art program.

2008
The North American Conservation Award presented by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association recognizes this area's contribution to habitat and widelife.

Today
Visitors enjoy Tingley Beach for fishing, recreation, and as a gateway to the diverse Rio Grande Bosque.
