“Behind the Franciscans” Water Gate
Inscription.
This water gate is named after the Franciscan friars, who built a monastery on St. Pieterstraat. At this location the northern branch of the Jeker exits the old city. To the right, the water gate connects to the first city wall that dates from the middle of the 13th century. To the left of the water gate is the Pater Vinck tower: this is the first tower of the second city wall, which was built around the the middle of the 14th century.
