Reagan Ranch
Malibu Creek State Park
A Future Presidents Ranch
By 1951, then actor Ronald Reagan purchased several parcels creating the approximately 357-acre ranch that spreads out before you and runs for 1.5 miles along Mulholland Highway. For the next ten years, Reagan bred thoroughbred horses at the ranch he named "Yearling Row", and enjoyed riding, and jumping his own horses. This is where he brought his future wife Nancy when they began dating, and later after they married they would continue to return with their children.
When Reagan purchased the ranch it included a barn, blacksmith shop, pool with bathhouse and a simple ranch house he and Nancy used mostly on weekends. The only building Reagan added was the six-stall stable at the end of the road.
When he had time away from acting, and later politics, Reagan always looked forward to relaxing on the ranch. In his own words he would say, "To my mind, nothing compares with the kinship between man and animal you find on the back of a horse".
A 1958 widfire destroyed some of the buildings, including the simple ranch house where the Reagans would stay. In 1966, Reagan sold the ranch when he became Governor of California. It was purchased by 20th Century Fox studios and incorporated into their adjacent movie ranch.
The 2018 Woolsey wildfire destroyed the remaining historic stables and garage as well as three structures later installed by California State Parks. Today, the contours of the land remain much the same and only a few remnants of the Reagans time here remain, but the spirit of the future President of the United States is fully present.

Regarding Reagan Ranch. This was the second of three ranches owned by Reagan. He later purchased a 688-acre ranch near Santa Barbara in 1974 near the end of his second term as California Governor. It was used frequently by President Reagan as a vacation home. The ranch was sold in 1998.
From 1945 to 1951 Reagan's first ranch was on eight acres at 17139 Roscoe Blvd, Northridge, CA. Its name, Yearling Row Ranch, came from the films Kings Row (which featured Ronald Reagan) and The Yearling (featuring Jane Wyman). The "Yearling Row" sign from the first ranch was moved to the second ranch in 1951.
Additional commentary.
1. Politely "kicked off" Reagan's ranch by Reagan himself.
I am 76 now, but when I was a lad we were good friends with the Meyers family who lived directly across the street from the gravel driveway that led to Reagan's house. One of our favorite horseback rides was to a large pond/small lake on the adjacent movie property.
One day we did not have enough time to take our normal route so we decided to take a chance and take a shortcut through Reagan's property. We could not see any vehicles so we thought that he and Nancy were not home. We rode our horses right down his long driveway and past his house. We were so close to their house that we could have flicked a pebble and hit it. When we got about what now seems to be about a hundred yards past their house we came to a water tank for his horses and I turned to Roland and said, Well, it looks like we made it. I no sooner had said that and I heard noise behind us.
I turned in my saddle and saw a vehicle coming with dust a flying and the occupant waving his arm and yelling. We turned our horses around and waited. We were busted. As the vehicle got closer I could see that it was a Willy's Jeep. As it got even closer I could see it was Reagan. I thought, Dang, we are really busted. He came to a sliding halt and said with a booming voice, Don't you boys know you are trespassing? I said, Yes sir. He appeared to be somewhat disarmed by my polite reply and said, Then why are you trespassing?
I said, Well, Sir, there is this really nice pond on the movie property that we like to ride our horse to. He said yes in acknowledgement of the pond and we later figured that he probably liked to ride his horses there too. I continued to politely say that we never before had ridden to the pond through his property, but we were short on time and decided to do so today. At that point we were ready for him to tell us to turn back around and get our butts off of his property. However, he allowed us to proceed to the pond, but made it very clear that we were not supposed to take this route again. We said, Yes Sir!
