Excerpt (in translation): Letter: Resistance fighter Nicolas Beaurieux is honored because he risked his life going through the front line to Maastricht on September 12, 1944, to deliver a letter from American General Hobbs. General Hobbs wrote the mayor a letter warning of artillery bombardments unless they could ensure that the German troops in Maastricht would leave the city. There is no doubt about the bravery of Nicolas Beaurieux and the fact that he risked his own life going through the battle lines around Maastricht.(Submitted on November 27, 2023.)
Plaque: Initially, the plaque was be attached to the facade of the building at Lenculenstraat 29, the former home of councilor Kersten, who received the letter from Beaurieux at the time. However, on closer inspection, the owner of that building did not want to cooperate. It was ultimately decided to install the memorial on the Kapoenstraat 5 building. After arriving at the Kapoenstraat-Sint Jacobstraat-Lantaarnstraat intersection, the resistance hero asked Maastricht residents to take him to the mayor. Research has shown that this almost certainly happened at Kapoenstraat 5.
