While in the city to attend a reunion of Confederate veterans, Jefferson Davis, ex-president of the Confederate States of America, addressed the veterans from this speakers stand on Wednesday, October 26, 1887. On the following Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Davis held a levee for children, greeting thousands of them from this stand. Mr. Davis stood near the center, resting his hand on a small table, while Mrs. Davis sat at his left.
