Bald Eagle
Although the bald eagle is no longer an endangered species, it is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Both laws prohibit killing, selling, or otherwise disturbing eagles, their nests, or eggs. Nesting bald eagles disappeared from the District of Columbia in the 1940s but were reintroduced in the 1990s. In 2015, a mated pair of eagles returned to a nest in the National Arboretum for the first time since 1947, and successfully bred. Since then, the pair has returned each year. As of 2016, the District had at least three known nests of mated bald eagle pairs. Viewers can watch the Arboretum eagles each season at dceaglecam.org.
