1. Station 5 Marker
Inscription. At the edge of the slough behind this post you can see the reddish stems of the dogwood. Notice the white, pea-sized berries. The inner bark of dogwood was used in a mixture with tobacco and called kinnikinnick. Indians favored this in their ceremonial pipes.

Jewelweed

Another plant growing along the edge of the pond is jewelweed, or touch-me-not. Its light green, watery stems have many branches. Yellowish flowers appear in the summer, and the resulting seeds are borne in pods that burst when touched. Rubbing foliage from the plant on areas affected by poison ivy reportedly affords relief. (Marker Number 5.)
