1. The Spotter's Cabin Marker
Inscription.
Art Savage came to Pequot Lakes in 1939 to serve as a Forest Ranger for the Minnesota Department of Conservation, where a significant part of his duties included staffing the fire tower. Art and Beatrice Savage lived in the Spotter's Cabin from 1939 to 1946 with their daughter Katherine and their two sons, Thomas and William. After the family moved to Hay Lake, Art continued to staff the tower, and served as a Forester until his retirement in 1971.

You are standing in the area that was once the yard below the Spotter's Cabin for the Pequot Lakes Lookout Tower. If you look back toward the tower, you can see the stone retaining wall that formed a level terrace for the cabin, which stood about 35 yards south of the tower. Built in 1928, this 3-bedroom cabin provided a residence for the ranger who staffed the tower as a fire spotter. The cabin was torn down in 1971.
