Chiesa di Santa Maria della Concezione
⎯⎯⎯
Church of Saint Mary from the Conception
Inscription.
Architetto: A. Casoni (1559-1634)
Architect: A. Casoni (1559-1634)
Barberini and the little trapezoidal square in front of the Capuchin Church (originally connected), that was also deprived of its former architectural features. The Capuchin Church was built from 1626 on, on a piece of ground donated to the Order by the Barberini Pope, Urban VIIIth, (1623-1644), under the supervision of Frà Michele da Bergamo, an architect and Capuchin President from 1626 to 1631. But the patron largely responsible for the church's creation was Cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of the Pope and a Capuchin as well; the church was built on Barberini family ground, and with its pious façade must have seemed strikingly plain compared with the sumptuous palace built for the Barberini family near the square of their own name. The project was completed in just a few years and was assigned to Antonio Casoni; in 1631, the Capuchins left their previous religious establishment in St. Bonaventura dei Lucchesi and moved to Santa Maria della Concezione. A modern double-armed stairway was built in 1890 to align the church entrance with the new street level, and this sits before the façade with two orders of pilasters, partially covered in the early XXth cent. with brick facing; a doorway sits in the middle of the lower order, crowned with the emblem of the Franciscans (two arms around a Cross). The church interior has a single-nave groundplan with five inter-connecting chapels
on each side, a presbytery and a deep choir. Fine paintings found their way into the Church of the Conception during the XVIIth cent., by major exponents of Baroque art, and include: the renowned Archangel Michael (first chapel to the right), a homage by Guido Reni to the famous painting by Raphael now in the Louvre; works by Lanfranco, including an Immaculate Conception (almost entirely destroyed by a fire) hung over the main altar (marble from the Vatican Cathedral was given by Urban VIIIth to make this altar); and works by Domenichino, Caravaggio, Pietro da Cortona and others. Of the same period as the church are the walnut briar pulpit, the side chapel altars and a splendid XVIIth cent. choir with walnut pews just behind the altar. To the right stands the old Oratory of Urban VIIIth, a secret chamber the Pope chose as his private place of worship that was still used for the same purpose by Queen Margherita of Savoy last century. Halfway up the stair is the entrance to the famous Capuchin cemetery arranged in five crypts beneath the church; the rooms contain niches, lamps and decorations all made from the bones of about 4,000 Capuchins who died between 1500 and 1870. This spectacle is both macabre and Baroque at the same time; it has long been a major attraction for foreigners visiting Rome and famous personalities such as the Marquis of Sade and Hans Christian Andersen have mentioned it in their writings.
