1. Connor Swimming Pool Complex Marker
Inscription.
Built in 1927, the original swimming pool was one of the first municipal swimming pools in the country. The Village outgrew the original pool, and in 1972, a new $400,000 complex was built including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an intermediate pool and a wading pool. The Meadowland Society deeded the land to the Village with the proviso that its use continue as a public playground, honoring the use that Cameron Field, a non-profit corporation, and Rev. Lewis Cameron, intended. The pool complex is named for South Orange resident and Medal of Honor recipient Peter S. Connor, who died in Vietnam in 1966 while serving with the U.S. Marines.
