the Roman period, the site now occupied by the Cathedral, located at the highest point of the city, was a sort of square which served as a Roman place of worship, approximately 133 by 156 metres. Tarraco was the first city in the Roman Empire to adopt the cult of the emperor and dedicate a temple to him. Recent archaeological research points to the existence of an impressive Roman temple beneath the Cathedral. The Medieval cloister made use of the outer walls of this Roman building.
