The amphitheater is the quintessential site for spectacles, battles between gladiators and wild animals. It was built in the 2nd century AD and paid for by a provincial priest or flamen. The long side of the arena measured 63 metres and the short 38 metres, and it is thought to have held 14,000 spectators. It was renovated in AD 218 during the reign of the Emperor Heliogabalus. In AD 259 Bishop Fructuos and the deacons Aeguri and Eulogi were martyred here. A church was built on the site of the execution in the 6th century and was later replaced by another, Santa Maria del Miracle, in the 12th century.
