Església de Santa Maria del Miracle
2018

del Miracle (Santa Maria del Miracle) is located in the arena of the Roman amphitheater built in the second century and abandoned in the fifth century. At the time of the Visigothic kingdom, in the sixth century, a Christian temple was built, probably dedicated to local martyrs Fructuosus, Augurius and Eulogius. On the occasion of the Muslim conquest, in the eighth century, the church was abandoned.

With the integration of Tarragona into the Catalan counties, a new temple was built over the old one, dedicated to St. Mary and documented from 1154. It is a building of the second Romanesque period, built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with a single nave, a Latin cross floor plan and a flat terraced roof. Between 1576 and 1780 it hosted a convent of Trinitarian friars and, until 1908, a military fort. Once the temple was abandoned it soon collapsed. It has since been excavated and recovered, since the middle of the twentieth century, simultaneous with works done on the amphitheater.
