Inscription. Completed in 1845, the canal gave quick and easy access to the Ohio River and Lake Erie. Boats were towed along the canal using donkeys or horses, traveling at 4 to 5 miles per hour. With ice in the winter, flooding, and the slowness of the boats, canal transport was far less efficient than railroads. By 1906 the canal had largely ceased to operate. As symbolized by the bullfrog, many residents have fond childhood memories of winning prizes at the fishing derby behind the Dutch Mill.
