Inscription.
Salem Cemetery Co. was chartered as a nondenominational corporation by some of Winston and Salem's most prominent citizens in 1857. E.A. Vogler's picturesque design for the cemetery – part of the Old Salem Historic District National Historic Landmark – emphasizes naturalistic qualities with curving roads, shade trees, mature plantings. and a wide variety of structures, statues, and monuments. Numerous local leaders are among the over 10.000 interments, including R.J. Reynolds, W.N. Reynolds, Bowman Gray Jr., and members of the Hanes family. The cemetery is also the final resting place for hundreds of veterans from wars of the 19th and 20th centuries.
