General Nathanael Greene Park
1742 - 1786
Known for his boldness and his strategic genius, Nathanael Greene was considered the most accomplished general of the American Revolution after George Washington.
While Greene is most noted for his command of the Southern Campaign of 1780, he served the Revolution's entire length and in all regions the war was fought, including at the New Jersey battles of Fort Lee, Trenton, Princeton, Monmouth, and Springfield.
Greene was one of many prominent Revolution-era individuals honored with street names in Paulus Hook when the streets were laid out in 1804 by the Associates of the Jersey Company; others included George Washington, Joseph Warren, Richard Montgomery, Hugh Mercer, and Baron Von Steuben.
The Associates of the Jersey Company was a group of private businessmen, including Anthony Dey and Richard Varick, who purchased land in Paulus Hook to develop it as part of Alexander Hamilton's Federalist vision for a nation built on manufacturing.
