Downtown Jersey City in Hudson County, New Jersey — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
The Morris Canal Little Basin
The Morris Canal's original shipping basin was constructed here after the 102-mile-long canal reached Jersey City in 1836. The canal, built between 1825 and 1836 and from Phillipsburg on the Delaware River to Jersey City, transported chiefly anthracite coal from Pennsylvania to New York and New Jersey markets. Railroad competition caused the Morris Canal's decline by the late 1800s. Only a few short stretches of the canal remain today, one of the most interesting of which is in Waterloo Village in Starhope.
Locks were used to raise or lower boats between sections of the canal that were at different levels. Boats entered through locks gates at at one end. These gates were then closed and water was added or drained until the boat was at the level of the canal at the other end. The gates in front of the boat were opened [remainder is unreadable].
