Inscription.
The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, which was completed in 1892 as a memorial to the 40 townsmen who died in the Civil War, was the first library building in the Town of Huntington. The building is the first of several monumental civic structures built in Huntington in the two decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century.

Built by the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Association in conjunction with the Huntington Library Association, it was home to the library until 1958. After the library relocated to its current location, the building, still owned by the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Association, was used by the Huntington school district. Starting in 1969, it has served as the office for the Huntington Town Historian.

In 2000, the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Association donated the building to the Huntington Historical Society. The Society undertook ambitious eight year restoration project and re-opened the building as a museum in 2008. Today, the Huntington History and Decorative Arts Museum hosts rotating exhibits of materials from the Society's extensive collections.
